Zoo Story

Michael is filling me in on what to expect from fellow screenwriters in LA. He says it’s best not to bring up the success of a project like Umzumbe Boys, because the likely set of responses will be, “Is the bond in place?…Is the director signed?…Let’s hope the shoot doesn’t meet with a hurricane.” Michael told me his technique: Let the other person bring it up and then you respond with, “Things are going well – it looks good – but what’s happening with you?”

Michael also mentioned he’s taking a harder line with people he meets outside the film community. When they ask about screenwriting projects or let drop, “I’m working on a screenplay – maybe you could read it” he tells them, “You know how at the zoo, the monkey house has a sign: Don’t Feed the Monkeys. Well I don’t feed the monkeys.”
