Stuck in Miami at a dinner hosted by our magazine, in an oak paneled restaurant trying hard to imitate the atmosphere of a London club. I’m sitting across from the general manager of one of the most respected hotels in Jamaica. I can feel how bored he is to be sitting here. He’s dining with the Caribbean editor of a top trade magazine and he can’t even get it up to talk about his hotel.

Then one of our salespeople asks me to share my good news about Umzumbe Boys. When I start talking about selling a screenplay the whole table hangs on every word. The GM from Jamaica turns out to be both warm and intelligent – talking about his great respect for Mandela.

We exchange cards, not because I could help promote his hotel, but to continue our conversation about films some day.
